We’re Ethan and Kat, a husband-and-wife team based in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Born and raised here, we spend as much time as we can outdoors; backpacking, camping, and exploring the trails that wind through our corner of the Midwest and beyond.
Granny Pack Gear Co. began in 2023 with a sewing machine and a simple idea: make better gear by making it ourselves. On trail, I go by “Granny” a name earned for sewing my own ultralight backpacking gear and embracing the spirit of self-reliance.
We draw inspiration from the trail and from legends like Grandma Gatewood, who proved that strength and simplicity go hand in hand. From ultralight backpacking essentials to seasonal home goods, everything we make is stitched with purpose, tested in real life, and built to carry stories.
Design Philosophy
That’s me in the photo; walking along the cliffs of Pictured Rocks, carrying gear I made myself.
At Granny Pack Gear Co., we believe great design doesn’t have to be complicated. Our gear is built on novel, original ideas executed with simple materials and proven techniques. By staying light on fluff and focused on function, we create ultralight gear that holds its own against big-brand offerings; without the weight, cost, or compromise.
Every piece is designed to solve a real need on trail and crafted with the same care we’d give our own kit. Whether it's a hammock or a better way to carry your load, our goal is the same:
Keep it simple. Make it better. Carry it far.
Off-Trail Offerings
When we’re not out on the trail, you’ll find us at local markets and seasonal shows, sharing another side of what we do. Alongside our technical gear, we design and sew bags, accessories, and handcrafted home goods that reflect the same spirit of simplicity and utility.
From rugged waxed canvas totes to pie-shaped trivets and flannel coasters, our seasonal line celebrates the classic, comforting nature of handmade things—created with care, built to last, and meant to be used.
Whether you're miles into the backcountry or just heading to your porch with a cup of coffee, we believe good design belongs in every corner of life.
